Letter: Losing friends is just another aspect of Trump’s legacy

FILE - In this April 23, 2020, file photo, President Donald Trump speaks about the coronavirus in Washington. As president he was singularly positioned to counsel Americans. Instead, he used his pulpit to spout theories -- refuted by doctors — that taking unproven medicines or even injecting household disinfectant might save people from the virus. I read today in Michelle Goldberg’s commentary, regarding the Twitter shutdown of Donald Trump’s account, that Sarah Huckabee Sanders lost “50,000 followers, in one day”! I’m not sure if that is a call for pity, or a complaint that Trump’s attempt at insurrection, is dragging her down with him. I’d have to ask her, I suppose.

The party of I, me, mine, which is now trying to save face, or keep playing its old cards, is being forced to show its hands. Playing its “party before country” hands will not work out so well with Trump’s exit and possible impeachment, I believe.

I lost a friend of 35 years since Trump’s election, over politics. My high school friend since 1969 wouldn’t call or answer my calls for one and a half years, over politics, after the Trump election.

A friend that communicates only through texting, continues today, about “fake news”, and detaching himself from Republicans in government, who now have detached from Trump. The friends I used to hunt with are all Trump supporters, and a group I affiliate with is divided, over simply wearing a mask for the “common welfare” of its members.

I wonder how many Americans have lost friends or family, through politics, or the oxymoronic “Warp Speed” operation; another Trump failure!
