Letter: Make Jan. 6 a national holiday in the name of those who defended democracy

FILE - In this Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 file photo, Trump supporters try to break through a police barrier at the Capitol in Washington. In what could be the longest of legal longshots, several of those arrested for storming the U.S. Capitol are holding out hope that President Donald Trump will use some of his last hours in office to grant all the rioters a full and complete pardon. While U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell delays the start of President Trump’s impeachment trial, I call on the U.S. Congress to pass a new bill that designates Jan. 6 as a new national holiday to celebrate our #realPatriots – the congressional staffers, Capitol police, Vice President Mike Pence, and others – who defended our democracy, freedom, and the Electoral College vote boxes against President Trump’s insurrection.

These #realPatriots deserve national recognition every year for saving our democracy. Recognizing and celebrating these #realPatriots can also help 100s of millions of our fellow Americans across our great country to start to see the tremendous victory we achieved on Jan. 6  against tyranny and dishonesty. The sooner we recognize and move past the amoral morass of inciting insurrection, the sooner we can start to heal, unite, and rebuild our country stronger, better and faster.
