Many months ago, I wrote a letter noticing how my days during the requested sheltering in place (the month of April) were very similar to those days that Bill Murray experienced in the movie “Groundhog Day.”
Fast forward to now, a day in December. My pondering over many past days has prompted me to declare another day of the week: Sameday. And, while I thought this finding might produce smiles, I sobered up when our country repeatedly notched well over 2,000 COVID deaths day after day, Sameday after Sameday.
There have now been close to 60 lawsuits filed on behalf of Trump, in hopes of rescinding millions of Americans’ votes cast for his opponent. These lawsuits have been daily newsmakers for over a month — more Sameday activity — and went nowhere due to lack of substance.
Now, the Electoral College has affirmed that Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States. And still we find GOP leaders afraid to acknowledge that their candidate has lost, Sameday after Sameday of cowardice and blatant disregard of voters’ choice.
Recently, the much-anticipated Pfizer vaccine has been shipped, and many front-line health workers have begun to be vaccinated. Hopefully, Sameday will take on a positive aspect as more and more of us get vaccinated. Perhaps, after Jan. 20, this country of ours can begin on a new path of collegiality and trust among people. Sameday after Sameday of cooperation, compassion and truthfulness. Perhaps then, smiles will return.
