In his letter, Joe Viland argues that the FDA’s regulatory scheme is unduly delaying the start of a vaccination program in this country. In his words, “The vaccine works. Let’s get it out.” Couldn’t agree more, although safety concerns must be strictly met.

The same logic applies to the long-stalled economic stimulus package. It’s now been more than two months since the House passed a compromise $2.2 trillion bill, and despite widespread suffering in this country, Sen. Mitch McConnell is still holding COVID-19 relief hostage. Just as with the vaccine, economic relief works. Let’s get it out.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
