Letter: Is my call really important?

Pet Peeve No. 15: Calling a business and having a computer answer the phone. “Hi, thanks for calling. Your call is very important to us, blah blah blah. If you want this department, press 1. If you want this…”

Too late, as I have already hung up. Whoever came up with the idea to have a computer answer your business phone needs therapy. If I, a real person, calls your business, I want to speak to a real person. I don’t want to press 1, 3 or 7 and then be put on hold for all eternity. If my call is “very important,” then answer your phone. I can’t imagine that any business is saving any money or time by installing a system that tells your customers you can’t be bothered. I’m sorry I am old fashioned, but if you want me to spend money at your establishment you’ll answer your own phone.
