I understand why so many support Trump. I get it. I am crazy conflicted by it because I am surrounded by people I love who happen to be Trump disciples. They have voted in a way that they believe will best serve our nation. I disagree with their viewpoint but I have learned to tolerate it, even to respect it whenever I can.

But how can any of us tolerate when the sitting president of the United States unleashes completely unsubstantiated claims that our voting system is fraudulent? Or even more ridiculous, that only the parts of our democratic process that don’t favor him are fraudulent? It is a mockery, it’s embarrassing, it’s pure tyranny. It has no basis in reality. It disrespects our thousands of county clerks and election officials who are sworn to provide a free and open election. It is the most dictatorial, freedom-destroying, democracy-attacking filth that the leader of the free world could possibly spew. All reasonable Americans should find it revolting. It makes me sorrowful for America.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
