Letter: Greeting each other safely

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, airport director Bill Wyatt, and Steve Sisneros of Southwest Airlines bump elbows after cutting a ribbon at gate B17 as the Salt Lake City International Airport celebrates the opening of concourse B, with a Southwest flight to Oakland taking off on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020.

A photo in The Tribune’s Oct. 28 edition showed Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall greeting airport director Bill Wyatt with the now common elbow bump. There have been many such photos both in other print publications as well as on television. I submit that this is foolish and should be rethought. An elbow bump brings both people into an approximate 3-foot range — too close by new distancing standards. A fist bump, on the other hand, will generally maintain the recommended 6-foot distance. Making matters worse, we are told to sneeze into our elbows.
