Donald Trump’s right-wing acolytes seem to regard him as the manifestation of the Second Coming. Liberals are probably equally convinced that he is the antiChrist. Bridging that gap right now seems highly improbable.
However, both groups have always respected the “through, rain, sleet or dark of night” United States Post Office. So now that Donald Trump, fearing a tsunami of Democratic mail-in ballots before November 3, is sabotaging even that government institution, can’t we agree that finally, at long last, this would—be dictator has gone too far?
Our democracy is, I fear, teetering on the edge of extinction.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.
Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
