Letter: No freedom to harm others

(Martin Meissner | AP file photo) German chancellor Angela Merkel, right, wears a face mask due to the coronavirus pandemic as she meets Governor Armin Laschet, left, during her visit at Germany's most populated federal state North Rhine-Westphalia in Duesseldorf, Germany, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020.

I don’t think that there are very many who believe that my freedom gives me the right to drink and drive. If I do, I endanger not only myself, but others on the road.

Wearing a mask is similar. If I don't wear one, I endanger myself. But, if I have the symptomless version of this virus, which is common, I also endanger everyone I am in contact with.

Is a mask perfect? No. Is my driving perfect when I am dead sober? I doubt it, but it is much better. It is similar with masks. We need to wear them to bring this pandemic to an end.
