Letter: Utah County students need education in science

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Angry residents react when the Utah County Commission meeting was adjourned before it even started. The group protesting against masks being required in schools removed the social distancing tape on the chairs and filled the Utah County Commission room to over flowing, prompting Commissioner Tanner Ainge to call for a vote to adjourn the meeting in Provo, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020.

Reading The Tribune article about the Utah County Commission meeting where citizens cut down tape meant for social distancing and spit gum into masks, it became obvious that the children of Utah County need to attend school (with masks and social distancing and alternative scheduling) to get an education in science, public health, civics, history and decency.

The number of uninformed and misguided comments coming from the citizenry that attended that meeting alarmed me.

Because of the continual underfunding of schools in Utah and the large class sizes, Utah is faced with a particularly difficult task of adequately and safely continuing its task of educating its children. On top of that, we seem to have leaders on the Utah County Commission (except for Commissioner Tanner Ainge) and in the governor’s mansion who seem to make policy based on the beliefs of the most uninformed. We need a healthy public education system in this state and in the country, and right now that is going to require some changes, sacrifices and incredible forward thinking and planning based on science, best practices and methods to promote the general welfare of our residents.

And to the parents of Utah County: You do not have the right to have your children give our teachers and other students COVID-19.
