As the coronavirus epidemic rages on, I am moved by frequent, sometimes eloquent, statements to the effect that, “By working together, we can weather the storm and overcome this nemesis.”
They are calls for collective resolve, collective engagement and, yes, collective sacrifice to turn the tide and win the battle in order to return our country to normalcy.
What I have not seen in these inspiring comments is the word “patriotism.” In this case the most basic of the actions we as citizens can take to defeat the enemy are pretty straightforward — masking and social distancing.
Although sometimes seeming insignificant and unnecessary in individual settings, they are, collectively, absolutely necessary for ultimate success in the defense of our country.
