Letter: A Biden-Rice ticket could unite the nation

Voters in both political parties are disenchanted with the Washington establishment, not only with the White House but also with Congress.

President Trump has had his share of detractors from the time he was elected, much of them brought about by his vitriolic personality.

Many people appreciate his stand on creating jobs and bringing businesses back to American soil. However, Democrats and left-leaning groups have not embraced his slogans, “Make America Great Again” or “America First.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic started in China, the worst in this century, doubters realized America’s dependence on the medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing supply chain had to be brought back. Cheap labor and transfer of technology has left America unprotected. So, whether you like Trump or not, his abrasive way has been better for America’s economy than what any of the Democratic candidates who preach his downfall could do.

It appears certain for Republicans and Democrats that the choice will be between Trump and Joe Biden. Neither person can unite the country or bring political differences together.

Diplomacy on the world stage is most important if we are to overcome the ongoing pandemic, distrust by our allies and dealing with countries considered our enemy. A strong economy is important for the future of America, but also diplomacy and reaching out across the aisle.

If disenchanted voters want to defeat Trump, Democrats must consider an alternative to unite the nation. Biden should select Condoleezza Rice, a moderate Republican, as his running mate.

Rice gained great respect serving as President George W. Bush’s national security adviser and secretary of state. Rice can bridge the racial divide that is accelerating across the country. I know Rice well, having served under her as a U.S. ambassador.

Condi Rice is a respected diplomat who can help unite our nation.
