Power is about control, or lack thereof. In the U.S. political system, the source of power is money.
Therefore politicians in the pursuit of gaining, or maintaining, power are constantly pursuing money. Here come the lobbies who donate to their campaigns.
The big money donors provide the means for politicians to maintain their illusion of power. Not surprisingly, they legislate in favor of their big money donors while paying lip service to the constituents who actually vote.
The politicians are deluding themselves, however: The real power belongs to the lobbyists. They have the money. The result is government by lobbyists rather than government by the people. And there we are.
