Letter: History repeats itself

(Alex Brandon | AP file photo) President Donald Trump listens to a question as he speaks about the coronavirus in the James Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House, Wednesday, April 8, 2020, in Washington.

After reading the Sunday column by George Pyle, “It can be hard to know who to trust,” I was reminded of a quote from a biography I read about R.H. Tawney, a participant in the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

He wrote about the English leadership and said, “One cannot expect respect for intelligence in an emergency, if one has not cultivated it before the emergency arose.”

History repeats itself, absolutely.

I am not so disappointed in the response to the current emergency as I am concerning the total lack of foresight and leadership shown by having a huge tax cut when it wasn’t needed and the continual “cheerleading” for lower interest rates by the Federal Reserve.

It is as if our leaders used all the ammunition on target practice and then, when the war came, there were no bullets left.
