Letter: Cancel General Conference to prevent the coronavirus from spreading

Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune Church members file into the afternoon session of the 189th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, April 6, 2019 in Salt Lake City.

In light of the arrival of COVID-19 in Utah and Gov. Herbert's declaration of a state of emergency, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should take the responsible action of canceling their general conference scheduled for the first weekend in April.

Other municipalities are requiring mass gatherings, such as SXSW in Austin, Texas, be canceled to prevent people from all over the world traveling to their cities. Currently the conference event planners have “encouraged” people to not travel to Spring Conference, but that will not stop hundreds or even thousands of people from traveling here.

The only prudent action in the midst of a worldwide pandemic is for the church to cancel this event that brings thousands of people from all over the world to SLC.
