Letter: It’s all out of order

(Ted S. Warren | AP) Vice President Mike Pence, second from right, tours the Washington State Emergency Operations Center, Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Camp Murray in Washington state.

It is reported that officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — who, according to President Trump, are “the best in the world at what they do” — now must have any statement about the coronavirus filtered through and approved by the administration’s task force, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. In a rational, sane world, wouldn’t this arrangement be the reverse?

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
