Letter: How we can lighten the Cottonwood canyons’ load

(Suzanne Paylor | Tribune file photo) Motorists have trouble driving in Little Cottonwood Canyon during a storm on Friday, November 29, 2019.

Hardly a day goes by now without someone screaming “We need to solve the crisis in the Cottonwood canyons!” But the suggestions for solutions range from ludicrous to completely unscientific.

Clearly, the real issue is an ever-increasing demand for the last few drops of a rapidly vanishing commodity. Curiously, the screamers have not yet suggested increasing the supply by creating new recreation opportunities in other areas of the Wasatch Mountains and in nearby ranges. We could drive this through sheer numbers.

Unacceptable? After all, that would mean ripping new roads into pristine areas to allow specific development. Of course, but we have definitively demonstrated we are incapable of solving the current equation.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
