Letter: Bernie Sanders can save the Democratic Party

(Nick Wagner | Austin American-Statesman via AP) Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., smiles while the crowd chants his name during a campaign event on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, in Austin, Texas.

As of this week, Bernie Sanders is leading with women voters, black voters, voters under 50, white voters, LGBTQ voters, Hispanic voters, voters who make less than $100,000 and he has the most donations from active duty troops.

His campaign has hit 7 million small donations, the only Democrat with more than Donald Trump, he has more volunteers than any candidate and won the most votes in the two first states.

The other side of the coin is that the Democratic Party is broke. The Sanders campaign has more cash on hand than the entire Democratic Party and their large donor fundraisers. Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigig are all beginning to rely on super pacs to even attempt to keep up with Bernie.

I believe that Bernie Sanders can save the Democratic Party. The party seems at a crossroads. One path is Mike Bloomberg’s, the cruel oligarchs who can buy the facade of support and don’t really need or desire active and involved voters, but would rather they check a box and let the ruling class continue to rule.

The other path is Bernie, who brings with him a flood of new and young voter enthusiasm, who has a movement that has shown they donate, they volunteer, they knock on doors and make the calls, not because they are paid, like Bloomberg volunteers, but because they see a future to believe in.

If the Democratic Party embraces the front runner with the most diverse coalition they will easily beat Trump and will reawaken the Democratic Party to what it should be, a multi-generational force for the working and lower class.

Bernie has the enthusiasm, the money, the coalition, the volunteers and leads everyone, including Trump, with independents.

I’m asking you to vote for Bernie Sanders in the Utah primary. Don’t help add to a contested convention, instead, join with the future of the party and help us beat Trump.
