Letter: Gerrymandering is real in Utah

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) House Speaker Brad R. Wilson, R-Kaysville, as the House repeals the tax package they passed last month during a special session, at the state Capitol in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020.

Rep. Brad Wilson, et. al., it is laughable for you to claim that gerrymandering is not a significant issue in Utah.

Last year, as you may know, the San Juan County Council radically changed (for the better) after a federal court mandated a redistricting due to, you-know-what. Accordingly, Navajos for the first time have a majority of the three seats. The resulting change is epic for this county of 56% Native Americans.

I live in a town of 5,000 people that is split in half by legislative districts, effectively killing our voice in the Legislature and setting us up to be dominated either by Provo or by wacko right-wing conspiracy nuts like Mike Noel, Carl Albrecht and now Phil Lyman, a convicted criminal who is becoming a pariah in his own hometown. I know because I have lived and worked most of my life in rural San Juan County and have experienced the Republican-led Legislature’s attempts to quiet any and all opposing viewpoints, even in this overwhelmingly one-sided political entity.

If you are an ethical man with morals and want to defend democracy, then work to institute and codify the citizen's props from the last election cycle.

Prove me wrong when I hear you say that gerrymandering is not an issue in Utah and think, "Brad, what have you been smoking?" Or, worse, "Brad, whose side are you on?”
