Letter: Choose life. Resources and love await.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Abortion-Free Utah launches a public campaign to end elective abortion in the state of Utah during a press event in the rotunda of the Utah Capitol on Wed. June 19, 2019.

Recently I had the opportunity to listen to a legislative hearing on House Bill 97, the Newborn Safe Haven Amendment sponsored by Rep. Patrice Arent, which would extend the period newborn children could be relinquished to 30 days.

A young man, 17 years old and Utah’s first Safe Haven baby, spoke about his life and dreams for the future. Recognize and respect someone made the decision to give him life and then delivered him to a safe haven in hope for his future.

Michael Kalm, in a Feb. 12 letter to The Public Forum, laments a statement from Sen. Dan McCay, “We tend to overvalue the people that are here and undervalue the people that aren’t here yet” as reason to degenerate the pro-life position.

Abortion proponents frequently argue that because someone who is pro-life doesn’t support every social, economic, environmental program we somehow aren’t truly pro-life? What’s sad is this position fails to recognize the resources, opportunity and love which are present for every life who comes into our amazing world.

Seventeen years ago someone made a choice to offer life and then step away in hope their son would have a better future than they could offer. Our society has the resources and love to accept every life.
