Letter: ERA coverage is ridiculous
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Kelly Jones, Charlotte Maloney and Jody England Hansen, from left, wave back to young student women visiting the Capitol as they dress up as Silent Sentinels (women who protested outside the White House a century ago for suffrage), as they attend the legislative session on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, to encourage Utah legislators to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. At right is conservative political activist Gayle Ruzicka, president of the Utah Eagle Forum, an opponent to ratifying the ERA.
The Salt Lake Tribune's coverage of the Equal Rights Amendment is just ridiculous.
The amendment died in 1982. The U.S. Supreme Court has made that clear in cases regarding other proposed amendments because of the time limit set in the original amendment and then because of the extension. A reader would never know that based on your coverage.
The Supreme Court will rule on all of this likely next summer, where I expect them to say, “You'll have to go back to square one if you want the ERA passed.” And the GOP-dominated Utah Legislature is not going to pass something that is dead as far as they are concerned.
How about a little better balance? Or does the nonprofit journalism model not allow that?
