Letter: A perspective for LDS members

(Francisco Kjolseth | Tribune file photo) The sun rises on the Salt Lake Temple on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

For all of you good members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, let me try to put this in perspective:

“For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation.” — Joseph Smith, on his seeing God and Jesus.

“Were I to ignore the evidence that has been presented and disregard what I believe my oath and the Constitution demands of me for the sake of a partisan end, it would, I fear, expose my character to history’s rebuke and the censure of my own conscience.” — Mitt Romney, in his impeachment trial speech.

You all know, in your hearts, that what Donald Trump did was wrong and justification for removal from office, and what Mitt Romney did was courageous and right.

Support free news for Utah

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources. As a nonprofit newsroom, we rely on support from people who believe it matters. Make a donation today to fund local news that serves Utah communities.
