Letter: Lack of conscience spreads like a virus

(Francisco Kjolseth | Tribune file photo) Rep. Phil Lyman, R-Blanding, settles in for another legislative session at the State Capitol in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Monday, Jan. 26, 2020.

Two things stand out about state Rep. Phil Lyman’s attempt to censure Sen. Mitt Romney for Romney’s impeachment vote.

First is Lyman’s incredible chutzpah. Lyman is a lawbreaker, convicted after a jury trial in federal court of intentionally breaking the law. Now he has the temerity to attempt to discredit a senator for adhering to the rule of law. I had always thought that the definition of chutzpah was killing your parents and then pleading for mercy because you were an orphan. That is, until now.

Second, Lyman says the senator’s judgment was questionable and he deserves to be censured on that ground, even though Romney voted his conscience. Has myopic partisanship gone so far that it trumps (pun intended) conscience. We know the president has no conscience, neither does the the Republican side of the Senate, save one. Now lack of conscience is spreading faster than the coronavirus.
