Letter: Don’t close Capstone Academy

My grandson attends Capstone Classical Academy where he is surrounded by enthusiastic, caring teachers and supportive, encouraging friends.

He has matured academically and thrived in an environment where everyone is valued and inspired to reach their fullest potential. Capstone offers rigorous academics, exceptional arts and extracurricular activities, and the unique offerings of Winterim.

In view of Capstone’s success in its very first year, I was astounded to learn that the Utah State Charter School Board voted to close the school.

Their reasoning is based on pure speculation that Capstone will have financial debt at the end of the year because of low enrollment.

While it is true Capstone has not reached enrollment goals yet, announcing closure at this point is premature.

If the board is concerned it might consider probation, but to shut down this exceptional school, which had the potential to be one of the best prep schools in the country, is shortsighted.

It is my hope and prayer that the Utah State School Board will overturn this unwise decision and support Capstone Classical Academy.
