Letter: One-way streets would reduce pollution

(Rick Bowmer | AP file photo) Exhaust comes from the tailpipe of a vehicle Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, in Salt Lake City.

Every time a vehicle stops it wears brakes, tires and roadways, and forward progress stops. Every time a vehicle accelerates, it wears the engine, drivetrain, tires and roadways, burns fuel and creates pollution. Hence, if we want to reduce pollution, transportation time and transportation costs, one-way streets with timed lights are an extremely effective solution.

I am hoping our governor and legislators can take a moment away from their busy schedule of enriching the rich and taxing the poor to contemplate this.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
