Letter: LDS Church is right to hold onto $100 billion

I’ve been reading with interest the many letters to The Salt Lake Tribune about how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should return $100 billion in reserve to church members, charity organizations or to other good causes.

The church uses much already to bless numerous people, including victims of natural disasters, health issues and religious persecution.

There are numerous scriptural references that detail future tragic events befalling a ruined world before the second coming of our Lord. Financial preparedness will really be needed then.

I believe this scripture best supports the church’s position to become self-sufficient: Doctrine and Covenants 78:14, “That through my providence, notwithstanding the tribulation which shall descend upon you, that the church may stand independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world.”

One could ask, “Independent from what?” I believe the answer is financial independence from the tragic events that will yet occur, including faltering economies which will never recover.

I support the church for having $100 billion in reserve. I wish it had double this amount. Many people worldwide have already benefited from the church’s assets, and will continue to be blessed by these resources someday in a time of dire need.
