Letter: Insist on a fair and robust impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate
(Patrick Semansky | AP) In this May 21, 2019 file photo, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, speaks to reporters after a classified members-only briefing on Iran, Capitol Hill in Washington. Romney's ratcheted-up rhetoric on President Donald Trump is again raising hopes among Trump detractors that the senator could play a key role in the unfolding impeachment saga, though the historic shifts in their relationship mean RomneyÕs next move is an open question.
I urge Sens. Mitt Romney and Mike Lee to put aside partisan allegiances relative to the Senate trial of Donald Trump.
The president's past and ongoing actions in Ukraine have jeopardized our national security and by themselves merit his removal. Further, his acts of corruption, crime and cover-up go well beyond Ukraine to include emoluments clause and campaign finance law violations, obstruction of justice and the welcoming of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Last, but not least, his lack of a moral compass, chaotic administration and destructive, divisive, and inhumane policies have corrupted political discourse, undermined our democracy and its institutions, undermined the rule of law, and destabilized global alliances.
Accordingly, please act to:
Insist on a fair and robust Senate trial. Genuinely seek the truth by insisting on testimony from those closest to the actions under scrutiny.Ask for a secret ballot, thereby freeing senators to vote their conscience and the facts without fear of presidential or constituent reprisal.Uphold the oath you took to defend the Constitution and the one you will take to act as a fair and impartial juror.I believe that doing so can lead to no other option than to remove this president from office.
Ellen Brady, Murray
