Letter: Climate change makes everything worse

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. John Curtis, R-Utah

Patrick Henry said, “United we stand, divided we fall.” With the new year just around the corner, maybe our resolution for 2020 should be to keep an open mind and genuinely listen to each other.

One issue so many Americans are deeply concerned about is the devastating impact our changing climate is already having on our communities. If you’re worried about immigration, increased drought and flooding will create more migration. If you’re worried about warfare, lack of food and water will lead to more conflict. If you’re worried about air pollution, uncontrolled wildfires and fossil fuels make it worse.

Climate change exacerbates so many of the problems we face. Let’s address this problem as a bridge issue instead of a wedge issue.

I’m encouraging my representative, Rep. John Curtis, to support the bipartisan Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR763). By putting a price on carbon-based fuels and returning the money to households, we can incentivize a transition to clean energy and improve our air quality while protecting families from higher energy cost. We can create new jobs in solar and wind. And maybe, by uniting on this issue in 2020, it can be the start of bringing our nation back together.
