A common Republican defense in the impeachment process has been that the Democrats have wanted to impeach Donald Trump since his first day in office. They believe that suggesting that Trump’s call with the president of Ukraine was an abuse of power is just the latest excuse to get him out of office.
As someone who had always voted for Republicans up until 2016, I must agree that there have been people fighting against Trump since day one. However, there was sufficient evidence before he was inaugurated that he was unfit for the sacred duties of the Oval Office.
Before setting foot in the White House, Trump had a history of business failures, shady business practices, a dishonest charity, a university scam and a past of mistreating women and minorities. Several Trump voters felt he was their best option at the time but have come to see this pattern continue into his presidency.
For many Americans, Democrat or Republican, the call with Ukraine is simply the tipping point. The evidence that Trump did abuse his power and thwart investigations against him is overwhelming.
Mitch McConnell’s promise that he will coordinate with the White House on the impeachment trial is deeply troubling and leaves no separation of power.
It’s up to members of Congress, especially my own senators, Mike Lee and Mitt Romney, to take the evidence seriously and do what is best for the country as a whole.
