Letter: A soldier in the war on Christmas

(Susan Walsh | AP file photo) President Donald Trump takes to the stage at a campaign-style rally at the Pensacola Bay Center, in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec. 8, 2017.

Those old Democrats have got the lying crook so worked up over impeachment that he apparently has forgotten to renew his attack against the war on Christmas. That’s why I want to thank you for finally publishing a letter Dec. 15 on the subject.

You see, I am enlisted in the war on Christmas, and I can’t be much of a soldier when it’s all silent on the battlefront.

We Latter-day Saints should be offended by the use of “merry Christmas.” First of all, words like “merry,” “merriment” and “revelry” often pop up together because all three suggest the same thing: public intoxication. This, of course, is contrary to our LDS values.

And the “mas” in Christmas is a direct reference to the Roman Catholic Mass. A more LDS approach would be to change Christmas to Christmeeting or Christreallyboringmeeting. (The latter brings to mind virtually every stake priesthood meeting I have ever attended.)

“Happy holidays” should be the preferred usage for informed Christians, as holidays means “holy days,” which last far longer than a Mass. “Merry Christmas” is appropriate mainly for any Catholics who enjoy getting sloshed.
