Letter: Republicans give their voters no choice

(Francisco Kjolseth | Tribune file photo) Utah Congressman John Curtis speaks about "religious freedom for all," and how to weigh that with LGBTQ rights as part of the Congressional Series at the Sutherland Institute in Salt Lake City on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019.

Rep. John Curtis says it is up to voters to decide, not up to Congress to take action against President Donald Trump.

With only one candidate on the party’s ticket, Republican voters have no actual choice. Unless the Republican Party gives us some viable candidates for whom we can vote, if we want to show our displeasure with Trump, our only choices are either the socialist programs put forth by the Democrats, Donald Trump or some third-party candidate. None of those choices is really acceptable to many lifelong Republicans.

Meanwhile, Republican leadership has shown itself to be Trump’s puppet and has said that they will not bring anything to a vote in the Senate unless the president first gives his stamp of approval. Republicans have already announced that the outcome of the Senate impeachment trial, which has not even been held yet, has been decided and the president will be exonerated.

Our Republican members of Congress need to get some backbone and stand up for what is right, not just for what the party dictates.

Lynn F. Price, Salt Lake City
