Letter: How will tax reform impact those on fixed incomes?

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) The House Chamber in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, as lawmakers hold a special session focusing on tax reform.

I am an elderly widow on a fixed income who wants to stay in her home of 60 years.

In order to do that, I have to hire much of the yard work and house upkeep done for me. I am concerned that if the state Legislature decides to tax services, this may force me out of my home.

The legislators say that this tax will be offset by an increase in dependent deductions on my annual state tax return. Of course, this benefit does not apply to me, whose children are grown and scattered across the country. They are also considering a tax on food, which also affects me along with those below the poverty line. I would hope the legislators consider carefully the effects of the taxes they levy on those who cannot afford them in their attempt to balance the budget and to avoid raising taxes on the rich.
