Letter: Democrats are making a critical mistake
(J. Scott Applewhite | AP)Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., joined from left by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., unveils articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019.
Two critical arguments are not being made in the impeachment hearings. Republicans assert that President Trump is genuinely concerned about corruption in Ukraine. What nonsense! Donald Trump is perhaps the most corrupt individual ever to hold public office in the U.S. His entire career has been a case study in corruption and deceit.
Secondly, withholding military support from Ukraine benefitted only two parties: Trump and Vladimir Putin.
And here is where the Democratic Party is making a critical mistake. If it does not incorporate corruptive practices (emoluments, tax fraud, etc.) and Trump’s unwavering support for a foreign, hostile power into articles of impeachment, then it will prove itself as inept as the Republican Party is corrupt.
