Letter: Let homeless people keep the shopping carts

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) Antonio Hernandez collects shopping carts in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019. Hernandez, an employee of Romac, is assigned to drive around the city and pick up stolen or abandoned shopping carts for return to stores.

I was absolutely disgusted to read the article in The Salt Lake Tribune concerning the grocery carts.

Smith’s, WinCo and Walmart are actually taking repossession of their carts from the homeless — to me this is about as low as it gets — but they are not prosecuting them for stolen goods.

The homeless have been offered storage units and bins in various locations.

These stores spend thousands on replenishing these carts, plus paying someone to go find them.

We have taken away the last dignity these people had. I suggest these stores donate these carts and demolish this enterprise.

We are supposed to help not demean these people any further.
