Letter: Ad tells lies about Rep. Ben McAdams

(Jeremy Harmon | Tribune file photo) Rep. Ben McAdams talks about legislation he introduced to study ozone levels during a news conference in Salt Lake City on Friday, October 11, 2019.

I have been seeing attack ads aimed at U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams on our local tv stations. I object strenuously to these ads because they are lies.

In one ad, McAdams is criticized for taking part in the impeachment proceedings while ignoring three other crucial areas.

First, the ad claims he refuses to work in securing our border while showing video of Donald Trump’s infamous wall. This is a meaningless attack. Around 40% of illegal immigrants arrive by air. Only about a third of illegal immigrants come through our southern border. Many of these immigrants are not illegal; they are legitimate refugees. This southern wall is nothing more than a shameful illustration of bigotry.

Next the ad claims that McAdams has done nothing to work on health care. HR987, The Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act, has been passed by the current Democratic House of Representatives with McAdams’ yes vote. There has been no health care reform because the Republican Senate refuses to even consider any of the bills passed by the House.

Finally, this ad criticizes McAdams for not supporting the Republican policies on trade. This president’s trade policies are effectively destroying American agriculture, steel industry and mining, all while also destroying our environment. In addition, NAFTA, which is so hated by Republicans, actually created more American jobs than were lost.

I would suggest that if we want to save this nation, we turn out in mass to vote for candidates like McAdams who are actually working for the good of the American people.
