Letter: What if it were Obama?

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Sen. Mike Lee speaks to Republican supporters during a news conference with second lady Karen Pence at the Utah Sate Capitol, Friday, Nov. 15, 2019.

As I watch the unfolding of the impeachment inquiry concerning President Donald Trump and surrounding events, it is clear that two of Utah’s congressional delegation, Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Chris Stewart, are among the president’s most ardent defenders and critics of the process.

I can’t help but wonder how different their behavior would be if absolutely every detail were exactly the same except that the president in question was a Democrat, perhaps Barack Obama.

I believe that Lee would be apoplectic with rage and Stewart would be filled with righteous indignation to the point that his head might explode. Both would be vehement and unrelenting in their calls for investigation and impeachment.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
