After more than a year of tax reform discussion, debate, meetings, public input, etc., etc., all our legislators can come up with is the same idea they floated during the 2018 interim: Increase taxes on food and lower state income tax.
This “reform” makes Utah taxes even more regressive than they are now. And, although the state ran a comfortable revenue surplus last year and will probably do so this year, they must implement this “reform” in a hurried special session in December. This is ridiculous.
Taxpayers, take a tip from Nancy Reagan: Just say no. Call, write, text or email your state legislators and say no to this tax proposal.
Tell your legislators you don’t want to increase the tax burden on low-income, hungry residents. Tell them you want tax changes debated in the regular session.
And tell them we taxpayers would like a little more compassion and creative thought in restructuring Utah’s tax framework.
