Letter: A good economy does not mean that all is well

(Ben Margot | AP file photo) The container ship Kota Ekspres is unloaded at the Port of Oakland in Oakland, Calif., in July 2019. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday, OCt. 30, 2019, that the July-September performance for the gross domestic product, the economy's total output of goods and services, was just below the 2% rate of growth in the second quarter.

I was disheartened Saturday morning to find in my Salt Lake Tribune a letter in the Public Forum claiming that the James Carville statement “It’s the economy, stupid” is as spot on today as it was 27 years ago.

If the economy is the only reason you vote for a candidate, what kind of person are you?

The letter stated that the median household income is up $5,000 under President Trump. As a middle-class American, I would rather forfeit that $5,000 for more compassionate immigration policies, increased awareness of climate change and united efforts for environmental protection, a country that is honorable in its dealings with other countries, less divisiveness and polarization in politics and a president that sets an example of civility, honesty and reason.

To prioritize the economy over everything else is selfish and unkind. My eyes are not wide shut. They see that a good economy does not mean all is well.
