Six years ago, comedian John Oliver, then on “The Daily Show,” showed a perfect example of a major problem in U.S. politics.
In response to a question he asked of an assistant to then-Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, as to what makes a good politician, the assistant responded that it was their ability to get re-elected. Nothing to do with good policy or working for the public, just getting re-elected.
Fast forward to Oct. 23, 2019, when 157 Republican congressman stormed a closed-door hearing, violating security laws with recording equipment, and staged one of the most childish displays ever in Congress in an effort to obstruct the impeachment inquiry.
I believe that this is in no small part to knowing they have hitched their wagons to the wrong horse with the international embarrassment that is Donald Trump. They are left with no other way to cover that up and remain in office than to obstruct justice.
How sad that this is how far our Republic has fallen.
