Every day we are witness to a clown show from the White House, where President Trump holds forth at center stage, spewing out wild exaggerations, prevarications and dubious statistics and assigning disparaging names to anyone who contradicts him.
Most recently, he has claimed that the Kurds never helped us at Normandy, that Italian-U.S. relations go way back to the days of Ancient Rome, that President George Washington ran his business out of the White House, and that he (Trump) and he alone defeated ISIS.
It would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic, coming from the leader of the so-called "free world."
Often Trump's aides and handlers are so appalled at what comes out of his mouth that there are often eye rolls, frowns, and even muffled gasps in the background.
Still, the majority of Trump's base of supporters seem mystified and often outraged that late-night comedians ridicule Trump's behavior. And the ridicule isn't just local, it's also international. Political leaders around the world have expressed concern that his shoot-from-the-hip foreign policy and erratic acts are not just detrimental to the U.S. but also to the entire world. In short, he simply cannot be trusted. (Just ask the Kurds.)
This leads to the question: How is it possible that a large majority of Republicans (87% according to the latest Gallup Poll) continues to support and defend Trump during the lead-up to his impeachment? And why are congressional Republicans not jumping on the impeachment bandwagon? After all, it would provide them with a way to remove (what they know but refuse to admit is) a dangerous, deranged individual from office and restore some confidence in government.
But no. Instead they continue to deny, defend and excuse — anything to keep Trump on the podium and them fiddling to his tune. It's a sorry sight, really, and one that will earn them eternal condemnation. A pretty high price to pay for a supporting role in the Saddest Show on Earth.
