Letter: Big families should pay more taxes for education

According to Haven J. Barlow, in the Oct. 13 Opinion section, one of Utah’s great assets is the commitment to family and hence, to pay for the education of children.

That may be true in thought. But in reality it is the largest families that get the biggest tax breaks, related to the number of children they have. They then pay less taxes than those with fewer or no children at all.

My husband owns a large building in Draper that demands $12,000 in taxes a year that support education and our school systems. We do not have children but do believe in supporting education. However, there is an obvious discrepancy between what he has to pay and those who have the larger need for actual educational needs for their children.

Barlow states that the “growing economy provides increased funding for our students.” Well, that should require families with children pay a higher tax burden to support the education of the children they have chosen to bring into our educational system.
