Letter: I’m confused, but not about my sexuality

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) President Dallin H. Oaks speaks during the afternoon session of the 189th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Dallin H. Oaks is right about one thing. I’m confused.

Oh, not about my sexuality (I’m a lesbian), but about why it matters so much to people of certain religious faiths.

These religious people claim that it is out of love and concern for LGBTQ people’s salvation, yet seem oblivious to the fact that this love and concern is often what drives people of the LGBTQ community to desperation, such as homelessness, alcohol or drug addiction and sometimes suicide.

I came out late in life because I listened to and believed such statements put out by the LDS and other churches. Fortunately, coming out and accepting who I was overrode my suicidal ideation.

The other thing I’m confused about is the “biological sex at birth” and that gender is binary. Aren’t Oaks and the LDS Church aware that there are people born with both gender characteristics, and that there are some women with too much testosterone and some men with not enough? Doesn’t this make gender fluid? More of a spectrum?

So, yes, I’m confused.
