Letter: Cognitive dissonance and the presidency

(Evan Vucci | AP) President Donald Trump talks with reporters after arriving at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.

Cognitive dissonance is the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs or attitudes as they relate to behavioral decisions and attitude change. Our United States of America is currently exhibiting this behavior in a big way.

I would have to think that most Americans, and particularly those who profess a faith, a belief that provides a moral compass, guiding the individual toward kindness and understanding, thoughtfulness and compassion for others, would be quite disturbed by the behavior of the tenant in the White House.

Well, guess what — it is not OK. It is not OK to name call, belittle, twist the facts, ignore legal proceedings, and the list goes on. You know it and I know it. We learned that in kindergarten!

It is difficult for me to believe that our elected officials, representing us, their constituents, go to sleep each night, having to wake up each morning to face the angst brought on by knowing one thing (allowing this behavior to continue unchecked), yet continuing to remain silent. They are complicit in America’s cognitive dissonance. Shame on them.
