Letter: Why live among people you dislike?

(Rick Bowmer | AP file photo) Flowers bloom in front of the Salt Lake Temple at Temple Square in Salt Lake City on Aug. 4, 2015.

As a “Jack Mormon,” I normally avoid taking sides in the local Mormon/anti-Mormon disputes. But the recent anti-Mormon rant by Rod Decker, as published in Sunday’s Tribune, seems to require a response.

First a comment, then a question.

As I understand the history, many decades ago the Mormons relocated to the territory that later became the state of Utah in order to get away from people such as Rod Decker and his ilk.

So, what are folks like Rod Decker doing here? There are 49 other states plus a number of territories that are not overrun with Mormons. Why does Decker choose to live among people he dislikes?

It seems to me that the adage ”When in Rome, do as the Romans do” should apply here as well.
