Letter: A borrowed gun killed Lauren McCluskey

(Trent Nelson | Tribune file photo) A photo of Lauren McCluskey is displayed at the Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018.

Recently Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. for demanding universal background checks for all persons carrying guns.

“With universal background checks,” Crenshaw said, “I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun.”

I hope Utahns will always remember that it was a handgun borrowed from a friend by a person who could not pass a background check that was used to murder University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey.

If you want your family to be safer, please support universal background checks for anyone carrying a gun.

John M. McCullough, Salt Lake City
