Your three-part series on lesser known contributors to our air pollution has been informative, and hopefully may actually influence some of our elected representatives to take action. I am concerned that it may also perpetuate some mistaken beliefs about electric lawn equipment. Specifically stated in the final article in the series, “Electric mowers are three to four times more expensive than gas-powered mowers, according to landscapers.” You might want to speak with some different landscapers or check the facts for yourselves.
The local big-box home store here has 13 models of self-propelled lawn mowers in stock. They range in price from $269 to $999, with the best selling electric model at $499. That’s right in the middle of the price range. Granted, these are not commercial mowers, but I seriously doubt that the price would shift by that much if they were.
For personal use at home it just doesn’t make sense any more for gas-powered mowers. Electric avoids dealing with gas, oil, running out to fill up a gas can, etc. They are also a lot quieter, saving our hearing as well as our lungs. I look forward to summer Saturdays becoming more peaceful and easier to breathe as more people wake up to the benefits of electric lawn care equipment.
