Letter: Impeachment would be pointless

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Ben McAdams meets with the Salt Lake Tribune editorial board, Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

This is an appeal to Rep. Ben McAdams and all the other House Democrats to stop pursuing the impeachment path.

Please don’t. That is a foolish, impulsive, emotionally driven movement which smacks of mob psychology. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is right. The risk of the Senate depth-bombing any impeachment decision by the House is too great. The last thing anyone wants is for Trump to be acquitted.

Instead, House committees should continue to gather evidence of Donald Trump's perfidy and keep presenting the evidence evidence to the voters at-large. Much as many want Trump out of office now, the better part of valor would be to make sure he is voted out in 15 months from now. Stop pursuing this foolish waste of time.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
