Letter: All citizens should honor their right to vote

(Richard Drew | AP file photo) Ballots are stored in bins during the vote recount in the primary election for Queens District Attorney between Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and public defender Tiffany Cabán, in the Queens borough of New York, on July 24, 2019.

Every time I see a naturalization ceremony, where people are taking the oath of citizenship, I’m moved. I look into their eyes and I see so many hopes and dreams. I see a bit of pride at their accomplishment. I see a bit of sadness at the fear of losing their identity. I see the glimmer of the American dream.

As an immigrant myself, I know what it’s like to live under despots on the left, dictators on the right, and a military coup that was described by Tim Rice in “Evita” as “slightly to the right of Attila the Hun.” I also know what it’s like to live in this wonderful country with all of the opportunities and freedoms.

As a citizen of this great nation, I understand that I have a fundamental responsibility and a sacred obligation to vote. I believe that all citizens should honor the privileges this country has given us and educate ourselves as much as possible so that we are able to choose and select the most qualified candidates to represent us at each government level. When it comes to federal representation, I support Rep. Kim Coleman.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
