Letter: Planned Parenthood is an exemplary health care provider

(Christian Gooden | St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP file photo) The exterior of the Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, the state's last operating abortion clinic, in St. Louis on Friday, June 21, 2019.

The misinformed and strongly biased Rich Lowry is obviously no friend of Planned Parenthood (“For Planned Parenthood, no doctors need apply,” July 20). His strong anti-abortion position greatly colors his view of the mission of PP throughout the world.

In my association of almost 20 years with Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, they have always functioned as an exemplary health care provider throughout the state, with eight health care clinics serving over 46,000 clients during 2018.

Pregnancy, HIV and STD testing, contraceptive care, cancer screening, teen advocacy, teaching of human sexuality and routine health care are the primary mission of PPAU, not abortion.

In Utah, approximately 4% of client visits were for abortion and were performed in accordance with best care practices.

The fact that PPAU has had a presence in this state for almost 50 years, with a very large donor base, speaks to the importance of this health care provider for men and women.

The fact that the current president of the national organization is being replaced in no way detracts from the important mission of this health care provider in Utah.
