Letter: How to help children at the border

(Eric Gay | AP file photo) On Sept. 10, 2014, detained immigrant children line up in the cafeteria at the Karnes County Residential Center, a detention center for immigrant families, in Karnes City, Texas. Immigrant rights activists on Friday, June 28, 2019, asked a U.S. judge to block a new Trump administration policy that would keep thousands of asylum seekers locked up while they pursue their cases, instead of giving them a chance to be released on bond.

The humanitarian crisis at the border keeps getting worse.

As I sit in my comfortable home, I find myself feeling helpless against the machinery of the Trump government as children are separated from their parents and stored in filthy, overcrowded facilities.

These people were desperate to find better lives. I wish there was something I could do to help.

Oh, wait. A simple internet search provides me with several legitimate advocacy groups that provide social and legal services for them. In addition to contacting our representatives in Congress, every adult who is alarmed by the treatment of our fellow human beings could make a contribution to one of these groups. Just a few that are taking the lead in the fight for fair and humane treatment include RAICES, Kind, the ACLU Legal Immigration Network, Project Corazon Travel and Human Rights First. Whether or not you believe these immigrants should be allowed into the country, surely you believe that when they are here they — most especially the children — should be afforded the kindness and dignity that we all would hope strangers would provide to our own children in a crisis situation. Please give.
